"We collected an extensive number of reviews that were posted online by nominees' clients and assigned a value to each one based on a number of criteria," said Ivan Budimir a president of a Langley-based company that aggregated the data.

"We thought it would be a good idea to use such reviews as a measure of a level of trust. But our focus wasn't just the reviews from Google and Yelp. We looked at a much more extensive network of review sites to get a better average," added Budimir giving an example of a related Topix.com discussion

Collecting reviews in this way gives a fighting chance to smaller businesses to be noticed. This is simply because businesses that have serve clients in large groups - such as training and workshop types of businesses, would naturally always end up at the top due to a greater number of reviews generated.

So perhaps it's not such a big surprise that a company like CERC got picked among much larger service providers. By aggregating the data from the web, and taking the average customer experience into account, a better picture of customer satisfaction naturally emerges, according to the company sources.

The review process took place over the first four weeks of January and encompassed over 500 service business nominees from Vancouver's Lower Mainland. It was the first such survey conducted by the company.

Regular cleaning of “high-touch” surfaces was found to be one of the key strategies for helping to reduce lost work time and the spread of pathogens in the office space.

This finding is one of five key hygiene strategies uncovered by the US-based Cintas Corporation, which were recently revealed prior to the official “flu season” of the Northern Hemisphere.

The five key hygiene strategies were as follows:

1. Regular cleaning of high-touch surfaces. These include computer keyboards, door handles, desks and telephones. A paper published in the Journal of Medical Virology found that pathogens, including the flu virus, can linger in these surfaces for up to 18 hours. Effective and frequent cleaning with disinfectant products kills the pathogens and reduces the risk of infections being transmitted via contact with these surfaces.

2. Deep cleaning of toilet facilities. Unsurprisingly, these areas harbour a lot of bacteria and viruses and are used frequently by most office workers. Thorough cleaning using industrial grade products and high-pressure cleaners, as is often done by professional cleaning services, is necessary to reduce the build-up of pathogens in every corner of these facilities in the workplace.

3. Regular carpet/mat cleaning. Mats provide the ideal breeding ground for pathogens, especially during the damper days of winter. Moreover, the shoes of staff and of guests to the workplace (e.g. clients) continually bring in fresh bacteria, some of which can be highly virulent. Shoes very often contain minute traces of faecal material, both animal and human, and this is transferred to the office rugs, mats and carpets on a daily basis. At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, the TC Williams High School print program will be shut down due to lack of funds needed to update the material and equipment in the printing department.  The print program has been in existence for more than thirty years.  It inspired the creation of brands like Infinity, Hobo, and Players World.   

Rachel Baron and Pat McMahon, owners of Old Town Editions, are leading an effort to raise awareness and the funds needed to save the printing program. Bob Trout, head of the printing program at TC Williams says, "Administrators just do not believe there are jobs in the printing industry to keep the program going". McMahon says, “Vocational programs like this one keep students interested in learning and give them valuable skills needed to enter the workforce.”  McMahon also said, that “Students and teachers at TC Williams are not happy about the closure of the print program.”

Both Baron and McMahon are trying to garner support from local businesses and the community to help save the program.  In addition to providing training opportunities for TC William students, Old Town Editions is in talks with paper vendors and companies like Canon and Epson to get equipment donated.  Their goal is to raise enough money and awareness to make the program solvent for the 2013-2014 school year until long term funding can be established.
